The story on the kite
Bali chased a demon, Mayavi, after killing his brother Dundubhi. Mayavi entered a cave and Bali followed him. Before entering the cave, Bali instructed Sugriva to wait outside for a fortnight — if he did not come out after fifteen days, Sugriva would understand that Bali had been killed. After a month, Sugriva saw blood coming out of the cave and assumed that Bali was dead. He returned to the kingdom as king. But Bali was alive. When he came back and saw Sugriva running the kingdom of Pampapuri, he became furious. He drove Sugriva out and enslaved his wife as well. Sugriva hid on Rishyamook mountain — because of the curse of Sage Matang, that place was safe.
Lord Rama assured Sugriva that he would help him. He cut down seven palm trees with one shot of his arrow, convincing Sugriva of his strength. He believed Bali’s crime was unpardonable, as he had taken his brother’s wife. He asked Sugriva to challenge Bali to a duel, during which Lord Rama would kill Bali. But when the brothers came to fight, Rama could not tell Bali apart from Sugriva, and could not shoot. Sugriva lost the duel.
Rama asked Sugriva to challenge Bali again — and this time to wear a garland. During the battle, Rama killed Bali with an arrow passing through his heart.
